As the mystic veil grows thin,
Let the hallows dance begin!
WHEEL OF THE YEAR
We have come to the final Sabbat on our journey through the Wheel of the Year – the Witch’s New Year – Samhain.
Remember, Respect, Release… and Renew.

The God at Samhain
The Sun has reached the peak of Scorpio, the watery sign of depth, transition, and the occult. After his sacrifice at Lughnasadh and his descent through Mabon, the God has now reached the Underworld and donned the mantle as Lord of the Dead, Pluto (guide of Scorpio).
The Goddess at Samhain
The Goddess at Samhain is simultaneously Earth Mother, Demeter, and Queen of the Underworld, Persephone. With the Earth reaching the peak of Taurus, the Goddess fully embodies the grieving mother; experiencing the pain of loss and death. Life on Earth withers with Her grief, as the Goddess mourns the loss of her daughter, Persephone (who has left her mother to descent to the Underworld.)

However, once Persephone reaches the Underworld she becomes its queen; embodying the energies of the Dark Goddess.
So, even as one part of the Goddess experiences death as pain and loss, another part embraces it as a gateway to new life, and the Underworld as the seat of the Shadow and the Soul.
Ereshkigal is the Sumerian Queen of the Underworld, the oldest form of the Dark Goddess. See my posts Ereshkigal and The Shadow & The Dark Goddess post for more information.
GIRDLE OF THE GODDESS
In the language of Theodomy, the 12 signs of the zodiac are further divided into 36 primordial energies of the divine feminine, called the Girdle of the Goddess.
At the time of Samhain, the sun is in the 23rd primordial energy activating Ereshkigal, the Queen of the Dead and Goddess of the Underworld.
Samhain 2022
The dark energies are intensified this Samhain with concurrent Underworld visits by three major travellers.
First, there is the Sun. The God arrives in the Underworld marking Samhain on the Wheel of the Year.
Second, there is Venus. Inanna’s death in the Underworld occurs at the same time as the God’s this Samhain. Venus has a 584 day cycle around the sun, of which approximately 15 months are spent journeying to and from the Underworld. It is a very rare occurrence for the solar death in the 365 day cycle and the venusian death in the 584 day cycle to occur simultaneously!
Furthermore, this year Inanna’s meeting with her sister and Shadow (Ereshkigal) – and subsequent death – not only coincide with Samhain but also last twice as long as normal, a full month rather than the usual two weeks.
Finally, there is Mercury. Mercury Hermes arrives at the centre of the Underworld on November 8. As one of only a handful of beings that can freely travel between worlds – without succumbing to death – Mercury Hermes is a psychopomp, guiding souls to the Underworld. His arrival amidst the deaths of both the God and the Goddess assists in navigating the dark, and facilitating deep connection to both Source and Soul.
Samhain 2022 is a powerful time to channel the archetypes of the dark and delve deep into the psyche.
The Descent of Inanna – reminder summary
Like the Earthly Kore/Persephone, the Venusian Inanna travels to the Underworld. However, Inanna’s descent is a more intense journey in which she sacrifices pieces of herself at the seven gates of the Underworld in order to gain access to her sister, Ereshkigal, Queen of the Underworld (and Inanna’s Shadow). At the instance of their meeting, Inanna is struck dead by Ereshkigal and hung on a hook for three days and nights… experiencing true death and consequent union with the primordial source of all. For the full story, see “The Descent of Inanna” http://people.uncw.edu/deagona/myth/Descent%20Of%20Inanna.pdf.
May your journey guide you into your Soul, opening the door to universal Source.
