(Autumn Equinox)
**The equinox is a time to appreciate the dual nature of the God. While the Goddess is a constant, the God cycles. Representing both life and death, the God is both a solar deity (Holly King) and an earthly deity (Green Man). At the Autumnal Equinox, the waning solar energies of Litha unite with the earthly sacrifice of Lughnasadh to bring forth Death and the setting of the God at Mabon.**
The Cosmic Cycle
The Wheel has turned again bringing us to Mabon, the energetic opposite of Ostara. At Ostara, the energies were directed out into the world but now, at Mabon, those energies focus inward as everything returns to the Goddess.

Day and Night are equal today but, in the spirit of co-operation and understanding, (and in balance of the battle at Ostara) Day will surrender and Night will succeed. From this point forward, night time hours will outnumber daylight hours.
At Lughnasadh, in his earthly aspect as the Green Man, the God sacrificed his Self for the good of the group. Now, with the Sun moving into Libra (the sign of balance and harmony), the God co-operates with the Goddess instead of fighting in battle. After a month travelling through Virgo – the sign of service, integration and natural cycles – the Sun God understands the cycle of death and rebirth, and so unites with his earthy aspect in its descent to the underworld, where he will become the Lord of Death at Samhain.

As for the Goddess, after focusing on the interests of the group in Aquarius, She transcended both Self and group to see the big picture in Pisces. While the God was integrating his dual nature, the Goddess was experiencing Her own expansiveness and the full cycles within. Now, as the Earth moves into Aries, the Goddess – with full appreciation of the cycles – initiates Her own descent leading the dual God down with Her.
Mabon has been called The Witches’ Thanksgiving. It is a time when we reap what was sown over the year, acknowledging both the challenges and blessings that resulted. It is also a time to be rid of that which no longer serves us – separate the wheat from the chaff. Let go of anything that interferes with the coming quiet and rest, or anything that will impede growth in the next cycle.
So, take some time today to reflect on the year so far. Harvest, winnow, and offer gratitude to for the continued blessings of life.
