WHEEL OF THE YEAR
With Sun in Leo and Earth in Aquarius, Lughnasadh initiates the integration of solar and earthly energies. The solar shadow (born at Litha) begins to flow into the earth, resulting in the first of the harvest. Grain is threshed, winnowed, and stored, and seeds are gathered to ensure the cycle continues at the turning of the Wheel.
The God at Lughnasadh
The sun is the primary source of heat, light, and life. It is the spirit (the fire) brought to humanity. At the time of Lughnasadh, the sun is powerful in its home of Leo – sign of self-expression, personal experience, and nobility. The God at Lughnasadh represents the full embodiment of the Sacred or Divine King; he who has been sustained, celebrated, and honoured by the people, and who now sacrifices himself for them. He is the life brought to the grain which is cut to feed the populace. This first harvest celebrates the potential of life!
The Goddess at Lughnasadh
Where the God at Lughnasadh represents the Divine King, the Goddess represents the Divine Realm. With the earth in Aquarius – sign of social ideals, humanitarianism, and the overall needs of the group – the Goddess as Priestess and Queen expands to become the Goddess as Queendom.
Uranus, traveller guide of Aquarius, represents the energies of primeval creation. He is the Promethean archetype responsible for both the creation and security of humans, and he is the hanged man who sacrifices for the greater good.
The Goddess in Aquarius welcomes the God back into Her being, gathering and harnessing his sacrifice to sustain the people.
GIRDLE OF THE GODDESS
In the language of Theodomy, the 12 signs of the zodiac are further divided into 36 primordial energies of the divine feminine, called the Girdle of the Goddess.
At the time of Lughnasadh, the sun is in the 14th primordial energy activating Bast, the Goddess of life, vitality, health, joy, and celebration. See my post BAST for more details.
LUGHNASADH & THE DISSEMINATING MOON
Moon sesquiquadrates Sun 135°
Rises mid-evening Set before mid-morning
17½ – 21 days after New Moon
Fruit
First Stirring of Dark
Distribute, Convey, Communicate, Teach, Share Wisdom, Abundance, Release, Demonstrate
The Disseminating phase brings the cycle to fruition. The seed germinated at the New Moon has now become what it was meant to be. The life impulse must fulfill its purpose by distributing the energy and disseminating the meaning. With the first stirrings of darkness, there comes an urgency to live out and share the value of the meaning. The symbolic seed bears its fruit.
The knowledge of others is secondary to personal experience. Now is the time to tell what is personally important. Inner wisdom nourishes the soul of the earth.
This is a time to take social responsibilities more seriously. Sharing does not only activate recent visions and revelations, it can set events in motion to make them happen. It is not enough to just do something well, one needs to write about it, publicize it, and distribute it to as many others as possible.
Honour the sacrifice and celebrate the fruits of life at the first harvest!
A Blessed Lughnasadh to you all!
