(Summer Solstice)

We have once again reached the halfway point on the Wheel of the Year – Midsummer – with the sun in Cancer and the earth in Capricorn.

WHEEL OF THE YEAR

As I was writing this solstice post, I realized that while we have spent an entire turn of the Wheel exploring the path of the earth and the sun, I have never given a proper context for these two energies.  So here it is:

The earth’s position in astrology is from the heliocentric (the God’s) perspective.  As earthlings, we experience energies from the geocentric (the Goddess’s) perspective.  Hence, our experience of the seasons (Wheel of the Year) follows the path of the sun.

As a reminder, the solstice axis (Cancer/Capricorn) marks the gates in and out of incarnation; cosmic death and rebirth.  (The Taurus/Scorpio axis marks the gates in and out of the underworld; earthly death and rebirth.)

So, putting those two pieces of information together, we get the following:

From the God’s perspective, the summer solstice is when the earth (Goddess) is in Capricorn marking an exit from incarnation (shadow overtakes the light).  Whereas, at the winter solstice, the earth (Goddess) is in Cancer marking an entry to incarnation (birth of the light).

Sun in Cancer

The God at Midsummer
The God has moved into Cancer, reaching his peak of strength as the full embodiment of solar light – the Oak King.  However, the Holly King has appeared and his shadow will begin to overtake the light from this point on.  Shadows at Midsummer appear small at first, but they grow with the turning of the Wheel.

The Moon rules Cancer, emphasizing the constant cycles, as well as hinting at the darkness coming to the God as the Wheel turns.

Earth in Capricorn

The Goddess at Midsummer
The Goddess has moved into Capricorn, the earthy sign of authority, public status, and highest potential. She has developed through maidenhood and sexual awakening, and has now reached full womanhood, sitting Her throne as Queen and Earth Mother.

Saturn rules Capricorn, emphasizing the Goddess’s mastery and maturity, as well as Her need for purposeful stillness.

Midsummer
While Midsummer is certainly a time for celebration, it is also a time for stillness. The planting is done and the harvest yet to come. Solstice means “stationary sun” or “sun sanding still” as the Sun appears to pause a moment before its descending journey.

Midsummer is a time in between (which makes it a favourite of the Fae) so pause a moment to take in the life around you… and enjoy the blessings of just being in this beautiful world.

THEODOMY

In the language of Theodomy, the 12 signs of the zodiac are further divided into 36 primordial energies of the divine feminine, called the Girdle of the Goddess

At the time of Midsummer, the sun is in the 10th primordial energy activating Frigg, the Goddess of fertility, family, motherhood, love, and women.

See my FRIGG post for more information.

Priestess Dawn

As the founder of Theodomy, Dawn combines her training in Gardnerian Witchcraft with her degrees in Psychology (B.A.) and Metaphysics (B.Msc.) to help others find connection with the divine and Self.
