Pop the cork and toast the season!
THE WHEEL OF THE YEAR
The equinox is a time to reflect on the dual nature of the God. Representing life and death, the God is both a Sun and Earth deity. At the Autumnal Equinox, the waning solar energies are balanced with the gathered earthly energies, as the God embodies
the Dying One at Mabon.
The God at Mabon
After the sacrifice at Lughnasadh and a month travelling through Virgo (the sign of service, integration, and natural cycles), the God respects the cycle of death and rebirth, and understands his role it in.
Now, with the Sun moving into Libra (the sign of balance and harmony), the light of day co-operates with the dark of night instead of fighting. The God unites his solar and earthy aspects, and descends to the Underworld, where he will become the Lord of Death at Samhain.
The Goddess at Mabon
As for the Goddess, She has transitioned through group-focused Aquarius and transcended to see the big picture in Pisces. While the God was integrating his dual nature, the Goddess was experiencing Her own expansiveness and the full cycles within.
With the Earth moving into Aries, the Goddess represents the spark of life that is eternal. Even when the body dies and descends, the spirit continues to become new life. The Goddess at Mabon guides and protects through the dark and shadowy season to come.
GIRDLE OF THE GODDESS
In the language of Theodomy, the 12 signs of the zodiac are further divided into 36 primordial energies of the divine feminine, called the Girdle of the Goddess.
At the time of Mabon, the sun is in the 19th primordial energy activating Harmonia, the Goddess of harmony, balance, love, and eternity. See my Harmonia post for more information.

VENUS & MARS at Mabon 2022
At the time of Mabon 2022, almost all travellers are moving retrograde (moving backwards with respect to Earth). However, two of the three* traveller guides moving direct are Venus and Mars – guides of Libra and Aries, respectively. This adds an extra layer of emphasis on polarity and balance.
Aries/Mars and Libra/Venus represent the spiritual axis of “I” and “YOU”; self and other, or subjective and objective. Their natural state is to be in opposition, representing the polar extremes along a continuum. However, currently they are exiting a square they formed a week ago. The square interaction created an added level of tension, conflict, and challenge. Their differences were experienced more acutely – each trying to control the other – with less appreciation of their shared axis.
Finally, Venus energies deepen the descent aspect of Mabon 2022. On September 25, 2022, Venus (Inanna) will pass through the seventh (and final) gate on her own descent to the Underworld. Her death happens a month later, at the Libra/Scorpio boundary, compounding the Samhain energies.
The alignment of these two mythologies – Inanna and Kore – intensifies the energies of the season*.

*Ceres is the third guide moving direct. Ceres/Demeter energies are also quite significant at Mabon as her daughter (Kore) descends to the Underworld, leaving Ceres/Demeter to mourn. The grief of the Mother is reflected in the decay and death of Nature all around us, as is explored in the Greater Eleusinian Mysteries (see my post Venus and the Eleusinian Mysteries for a deeper exploration). Compounding these energies at Mabon 2022 is the conjunction Ceres is making with the moon, further facilitating the emotional experience.
GRATITUDE
Mabon has been called The Witches’ Thanksgiving. It is a time when we reap what was sown over the year, acknowledging both the challenges and blessings that resulted. It is also a time to be rid of that which no longer serves us – separate the wheat from the chaff. Let go of anything that interferes with the coming quiet and rest, or anything that will impede growth in the next cycle.
Gather, thresh, and winnow your harvest. Reflect on the challenges and toast the blessings.
Though the God is in peaceful Libra, the Goddess is in life-affirming Aries reminding us …
We are here, We are alive,
and We will survive!
